Welcome to CN Group

The Group\\'s history goes back to the first issue of the Carlisle Patriot on 3 June 1815. During the nineteenth century the company remained Carlisle based, but expanded to publish The East Cumberland News (the two newspapers were subsequently amalgamated to form The Cumberland News). John Burgess, the present Chief Executive\\'s great grandfather, joined the company in 1867 and became Editor in 1868.

In the twentieth century the company expanded with an evening paper in Carlisle, and after the Second World War moved to acquire titles in west Cumbria, Hexham, Barrow-in-Furness and, more recently, Langholm in Dumfriesshire.

The company was a founder shareholder in Border Television, and although managed separately, remained involved until it was sold at the end of the 1990s. At the end of the 90s the Group decided to expand into radio, buying six stations. More recently, the company has sold its Midlands interests and now has 3 thriving commercial stations.

The Group sees itself continuing to expand in the future

CN Group has always been independent and is now a dynamic, media specialist based in Carlisle.

The Group operates with three Divisions.

PUBLISHING

The Publishing Division publishes daily and weekly newspapers in Cumbria, Northumberland and South West Scotland, as well as Life Magazines, Reader Holidays, Market Research and Pinpoint Leaflet Distribution are further services available from the Division.

The Publishing Division is responsible for the Group\\'s newspaper publishing and associated activities in Cumbria, Northumberland, Northern Lancashire and Scotland. The main publishing centres are based at Carlisle, Barrow-in-Furness and Hexham, with other offices in the principal towns of the region.

The Division publishes 2 daily evening newspapers, 5 paid-for weeklies, and a range of free newspapers, magazines and niche publications. It also has a thriving new media business, and all titles have linked websites, with all aspects of electronic publishing handled by the Division.

RADIO

The Division operates three radio stations. The stations are City Beat ( Belfast), The Bay ( Morecambe Bay) and Lakeland FM (Kendal). The stations are all music based, but also include local news, weather and information.

PRINT

The Division operates a state-of-the-art printing press in Carlisle. It trades under the name \\'CN Newsprint\\'. They print the Group\\'s own titles, but the majority of the capacity is used to print external customer titles. Customers include other publishers and specialist, magazine-style publishers.

The Group has a headquarters staff in Carlisle and is led by Robin Burgess, Chief Executive, who is the fourth generation of his family to be involved in the business.
